On January 14, the Geometry class visited Cal Tech. The students visited the dorms, took a walking tour, and were enlightened about the field of computational biology by our host, Professor Markus Convert.

Highlights from 2004-2005
In general, we work our way through our very excellent geometry text, chapter by chapter. Students generate their own assignment sheet, with assignments and exams noted on the board each class meeting.
Key Strategy for Class Success: Work ahead, completing the assignment on the day it is presented. Use the extra time for extra credit or correcting and practicing errors from exams and homework.
Parents, don't be shy about stopping by for a visit. I always enjoy talking about your children and their progress. 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m is the best time for this.
Our Geometry students demonstrate their keen understanding of Euclidian Proofs!
Former SPMS math teacher, Mr. Henry Bosma, made his annual visit to the geometry classes, to share his art of paper cutting. Thanks, Mr. Bosma
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the class has concluded Chapter 8 on Right Triangles, with the test scheduled for Februrary 7. We will then begin one of the more challenging chapters on circles.
A special guest will visit the class on February 9, in anticipation of Valentine's Day! Stay tuned.
On January 31, the Geometry and Calculus B/C classes visited Cal Tech. Our host was Dr. Gary Lorden, Professor of Mathematics, Chairman of the Math Department, and advisor for the TV show NUMB3RS. The class met and talked with several members of the cast and staff of the highly rated CBS show. Actor David Krumholtz, who plays Professor Charlie Eppes in the drama, gave generously of his time, signing autographs, telling stories about the show, and taking pictures with the students. Dr. Lorden gave an informative presentation on the mathematics used in every episode. A big thank you to Dr. Lorden and Mr. Krumholtz for a wonderful afternoon!
All the students presented their proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem on May 30. There are over 200 known proofs, and the students presented some of the most interesting!.
Jocelyn Lee and Jung Hun Koh present their 30-step proof of the Pythagorean Theorem.
